The 1996 Women's Olympic Volleyball Tournament was the ninth edition of the event, organised by the world's governing body, the FIVB in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee. It was held from July 20 to August 3, 1996 at the Stegeman Coliseum of The University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia and at the Omni Coliseum in Atlanta, Georgia.

Qualification

United States qualified as the host nation, Cuba (1), Brazil (2) and PR China (3) qualified by finishing in the top-three at the 1995 FIVB Women's World Cup, while Germany (Europe), Canada (NORCECA), Peru (South America), South Korea (Asia) and Russia (Africa) won the continental qualifying tournament. Netherlands, Japan and Ukraine came through by finishing in the top-three at the Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament, held from May 26 to June 2 in Tokyo, Japan.
